2020 Rainbow Trout Fishing in Tasmania

January 9, 2020

Rainbow Trout in Tasmania are considered by many anglers to be the best sporting fish to catch, but they have not adapted in the wild as well as the Brown Trout.

This species was introduced from North America in 1898. The Tasmanian record Rainbow Trout is 7.8kg caught in the Ouse River in 1933. Rainbow Trout usually have a dark olive green back and silvery white ventral surface, with a pink to red flash along the side.

Our recent trip targeting rainbow trout produced the following results – Consistently windy conditions this trout fishing season have led to the exploration of different fly fishing waters and techniques. Although windy, conditions have been relatively warm across Tassie and good hatches of mayfly, beetles and midge have been experienced on most days out fishing. A particular highlight this season has been wind lane fly fishing from the boat – drifting along a slick, looking for big dark shapes emerging from deep water in search of insects. This method has resulted in some great catches, including this superb rainbow trout taken on a size 14 gum beetle pattern.
