Get up to date with our recap the first month of the trout fishing season in Tasmania for 2022.
One month into the Tasmanian trout fishing season and what a month it was!
Good rain and snowfall throughout the winter led to high water levels, particularly around the highland lakes. The lakes generally produce the best fishing around this time of the year, as the rivers are usually flowing high and cold with minimal insect activity in the cool weather conditions.
This August was no exception, with many anglers experiencing the best opening of the Tasmanian trout fishing season weekend in memory around the Central Highland Lakes.
Exceptional lake fishing continued all the way through August, with full lakes providing excellent wet fly fishing and even the occasional day of dry fly fishing action.
Shore based anglers have been treated to some fantastic sight fishing, with the trout pushing up into the flooded lake margins in search of new feeding grounds. Small wet flies have produced some great fish and occasionally, when fish have been “tailing” small dry flies have resulted in some heart stopping takes.
For those with a boat, catch rates in August have been the highest recorded for many years. Fishing Loch Style with a team of wet flies has produced huge numbers offish, as the trout hunt the protein rich galaxia and other baitfish found in many of the highland lakes.
Our top fishing locations in Tasmania for August 2022 were:
- Little Pine Lagoon
- Penstock Lagoon
